just a note to say - if you missed Tripoli Colorado's Spring Fling Two Day Launch this last weekend, you missed a great turnout and 2 absolutely great days of flying !

Saturday, we had sunburn sunshine well into the afternoon and very mild winds all morning. the weather site predictions of 50% cloud cover and 30% chance of thunderstorms didn't even come close until well thru mid/late-afternoon, and even then, not so much - at least over OUR heads. We did get to see some weather moving around us, and some even looked like they could become the dreaded .........

Alphabet Contest Update
Monday, June 01 @ 18:48:06 MDT by jhinton (85 reads)
Rocketry Contests

Registration is closed. Fifteen flyers are in the soup, flying for bragging rights and a prize pot of three hundred dollars. Current standings are gleaned from NCR flight cards and the rusty cobwebs in my mind. If I am in error with the results so far, prove it to me otherwise. The contestants are listed in Alphabetical order and the list has no bearing on the respective order of their successful sojourn so far.

    1. Bill Beggs 2. Dennis Billings 3. Grant Dreasher 4. Ron Dreasher 5. Scott Evans 6. Chris Frazier 7. Steve Frazier 8. Joe Hinton 9. Art Hoag 10. Rick McDonald 11. Chad Moore 12. Ken Reilly 13. Jon Skuba 14. Mark Stumbaugh 15. John Wilke

Bill Beggs started his run thru the challenge at Mile High Mayhem. Two DQ’s (first run to D, second run to I) and a third start up thru the Alphabet left Bill completing the first five letters- A to E. Dennis Billings had a rough start in February and again in March but put together an impressive string of flights at Mayhem to complete the first ten letters - A to J. Grant Dreasher also started the challenge at Mile High Mayhem and successfully completed the first three letters – A to C. Ron Dreasher started in March and started over at Mayhem, taking it one step further and completed the first six letters – A to F. Scott Evans had his share of little problems but nailed his L3 at Mayhem. With his third start up the alphabet, Scott got thru the first five letters – A to E. Chris Frazier started in February and re-started in February, and has completed the first three letters – A to C. Steve Frazier also started in February but hasn’t pushed beyond his first letter – A. Joe Hinton hasn’t given up but DQ’d with his F flight at Mayhem and needs to start over. Art Hoag is smarter than a fifth grader but hasn’t started his Alpha assault. Rick McDonald paid to play but hasn’t started yet either. Rick did indicate that he might not win the prize pot but should win STYLE points as every flight for his Alphabet challenge would be made with the same STYLE rocket – an Honest John. Chad Moore has focused more on altitude records than running the alphabet but sits comfortably with A down and the rest to follow. Ken Reilly made a most impressive run, starting with A at Mayhem but unfortunately disintegrated on his L attempt. Don’t count Ken out yet. Jon Skuba took an early lead in the contest, successfully flying through the first eight letters and adding the ninth letter - I - at Mayhem. Mark Stumbaugh started in February, started over in March and added to his progress at Mayhem, reaching for and setting himself up for a showdown spelling bee with successfully negotiating the first ten letters –J. And John Wilke, after two rough starts and then by using some borrowed rockets and one of his own, has managed to sneak up to a tie for the lead, completing the first ten letters – A to J.

Go figure. Fifteen talented flyers with limited launch opportunities and weather worries. Now it gets interesting.

News Item: Apologies to all
Saturday, May 30 @ 08:49:47 MDT by WMusselman (70 reads)
Club NewsApologies to all for the mess on the website last night and today. Another automated spammer apparently broke in and posted porno ads to the forums. This has gotten out of hand and measures will be taken. I just moved yesterday (Friday) and do NOT have a new Internet connection set up yet so dealing with this has been a bit of a nightmare. Rest assured we WILL take measures to stop this crap in its tracks - I will need to research appropriate measures for the webforums software that we use as well as methods for preventing the automated registration of new users on the site. Unfortunately this may necessitate moderation on new user accounts where we validate the user before allowing them to join. In the meantime, I have deleted the user accounts involved in the hopes this might temporarily solve the problem. If it does not, I may have to shut the forums down for a few days until a solution is found. Watch this space for further news. Warren Musselman - Webmaster

Joint Statement on the BATFE Litigation

May 18, 2009

Since the U. S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms & Explosives has not appealed the decision of the Federal District Court of March 16, 2009, which ordered the agency to vacate their classification of APCP as an explosive, and the period for their ability to do so has expired as of May 16, 2009, on advice of counsel, we believe that the judgment is considered final although we have not received confirmation from BATFE. Accordingly, members may operate under the understanding that APCP rocket motors are no longer regulated as an explosive material by BATFE, and no longer require the permits formerly required by the agency to buy, sell, or possess such motors.

Members possessing a LEUP are advised that they should evaluate their individual situation based upon whether they possess (or plan to possess) and store materials that are still considered regulated by BATFE. While APCP rocket motors are now no longer regulated under the requirements of the "Orange Book" and are not subject to requiring a LEUP, other materials may be subject to these requirements.

Members are also reminded that both TRA and NAR safety codes stipulate what motors they may possess, depending on their level of flyer certification. These rules still apply to our members. We likewise strongly encourage vendors of hobby rocket motors to continue to work cooperatively with the rocketry community to only sell rocket motors to customers who possess flyer certifications commensurate with the motors they wish to purchase. Ensuring we maintain our strong level of self-regulation will be an essential element in our ability to retain this freedom from overregulation by outside agencies.

Members should immediately contact the leadership of TRA or NAR should they encounter situations where any BATFE personnel conduct themselves in a manner inconsistent with the final judgment of the Federal District Court.

Ken Good TRA President

Trip Barber NAR President
