Re-learning the Alphabet Sunday, January 17 @ 10:02:52 MST by jhinton (417 reads) | Re-learning the Alphabet. The introduction of the Alphabet contest was popular enough to warrant a repeat, especially since the Prize Pot won by John Wilke will be converted/rolled over to a 3 Dogs Rocketry $300.00 Gift Certificate and used as a primer for the kitty this year. Thank you John!! This contest stresses reliability and maximum performance as a tie breaker. Participants will be using the same rules for this contest as in 2009 with the addition of one caveat – any and all rockets used by a competitor have to have been personally built by the entrant (group project built rockets not allowed). Entry fee remains the same - $20.00 to participate this year. Pay entry fee to the contest administrator – Joe Hinton.

Alphabet Contest Update Monday, June 01 @ 18:48:06 MDT by jhinton (847 reads) | Registration is closed. Fifteen flyers are in the soup, flying for bragging rights and a prize pot of three hundred dollars. Current standings are gleaned from NCR flight cards and the rusty cobwebs in my mind. If I am in error with the results so far, prove it to me otherwise. The contestants are listed in Alphabetical order and the list has no bearing on the respective order of their successful sojourn so far.
1. Bill Beggs
2. Dennis Billings
3. Grant Dreasher
4. Ron Dreasher
5. Scott Evans
6. Chris Frazier
7. Steve Frazier
8. Joe Hinton
9. Art Hoag
10. Rick McDonald
11. Chad Moore
12. Ken Reilly
13. Jon Skuba
14. Mark Stumbaugh
15. John Wilke
Bill Beggs started his run thru the challenge at Mile High Mayhem. Two DQ’s (first run to D, second run to I) and a third start up thru the Alphabet left Bill completing the first five letters- A to E.
Dennis Billings had a rough start in February and again in March but put together an impressive string of flights at Mayhem to complete the first ten letters - A to J.
Grant Dreasher also started the challenge at Mile High Mayhem and successfully completed the first three letters – A to C.
Ron Dreasher started in March and started over at Mayhem, taking it one step further and completed the first six letters – A to F.
Scott Evans had his share of little problems but nailed his L3 at Mayhem. With his third start up the alphabet, Scott got thru the first five letters – A to E.
Chris Frazier started in February and re-started in February, and has completed the first three letters – A to C.
Steve Frazier also started in February but hasn’t pushed beyond his first letter – A.
Joe Hinton hasn’t given up but DQ’d with his F flight at Mayhem and needs to start over.
Art Hoag is smarter than a fifth grader but hasn’t started his Alpha assault.
Rick McDonald paid to play but hasn’t started yet either. Rick did indicate that he might not win the prize pot but should win STYLE points as every flight for his Alphabet challenge would be made with the same STYLE rocket – an Honest John.
Chad Moore has focused more on altitude records than running the alphabet but sits comfortably with A down and the rest to follow.
Ken Reilly made a most impressive run, starting with A at Mayhem but unfortunately disintegrated on his L attempt. Don’t count Ken out yet.
Jon Skuba took an early lead in the contest, successfully flying through the first eight letters and adding the ninth letter - I - at Mayhem.
Mark Stumbaugh started in February, started over in March and added to his progress at Mayhem, reaching for and setting himself up for a showdown spelling bee with successfully negotiating the first ten letters –J.
And John Wilke, after two rough starts and then by using some borrowed rockets and one of his own, has managed to sneak up to a tie for the lead, completing the first ten letters – A to J.
Go figure. Fifteen talented flyers with limited launch opportunities and weather worries. Now it gets interesting.

Up the Alphabet Update - March Sunday, March 08 @ 12:36:21 MDT by jhinton (496 reads) | Come on in, the alphabet soup is just starting to warm up. Three more contestants entered the mix in the Up With the Alphabet contest. First to join the parade was Ken Reilly who succesfully knocked down the first three letters in style. Unfortunately for Ken, or perhaps not, what was going to be Ken's D entry flight was damaged by a hard landing when his son John flew it first. Ron Dreasher jumped in and easily skipped all of the difficulties the elusive A has caused for some. The B, C and D flights were also prefect and it looked as if the current leader Jon Skuba might feel some heat. Unfortunately for Ron, his Big Daddy flight on an E motor suffered a hard nose landing and radically altered the geometry and flight characteristics of his entry requiring a start over. The third entrant of the day took three tries to get past the start. John Wilke's first A flight with a borrowed Wizard happened to land on the asphalt and snapped loose a fin. Even more stunning was the fin breaking landing with an Alpha 3 on his second attempt. Third time was the charm and our Altitude Junkie Emeritus acheived an okay and a pass on the A flight using a spool. And since the spool was good enough for the A, it worked equally well for the B and C. Two more borrowed rockets and two more successful flights now has John resting in third place. Between the leader, Jon Skuba and John Wilke, the winner of the last year's Single Shot Sweepstakes, Mark Stumbaugh, has quietly worked thru the first six letters and is looking forward to returning to the North Site in April for his G and beyond shots. Maybe the biggest surprize of the day befell Dennis Billings. Pip Squeak, a very reliable vehicle, also suffered the improbable loss of a fin upon landing and Dennis is back to starting over again. Remaining contestants Chad Moore wasn't on site and Chris and Steve Frazier did not fly anything. Joe Hinton had an ignitor /launch failure and in the process of switching out ignitors, tweeked off a fin and subsequently didn't/couldn't fly his E shot.
To add insult to injury, the launch lug came off while loading Joe's Sunmaid raisin box but that's a different story.

Alphabet Contest Update Monday, February 09 @ 09:38:35 MST by jhinton (540 reads) | Seven players started to climb in the Alphabet Contest at the February launch. Three of the seven flyers actually experienced difficulties in their progressions and had to start over. Flyers have until close of the waiver on Monday, May 25th, 2009, to enter this contest – rules are posted again following this update. Current leader is Jon Skuba who has successfully accomplished the A thru H run. Joe Hinton suffered an early set back but re-started and achieved the A thru D progression. Mark Stumbaugh and Chris Fraizer qualified with A thru C flights. Steve Fraizer and Chad Moore completed the A flights. Unfortunately for Dennis Billings, his C shot was disqualified and Dennis elected not to re-start the competition until next launch. Current Prize pot sits at $140.00

The U.S. Model Rocket Sporting Code, or "Pink Book," is the official rulebook for conducting and participating in NAR sanctioned competition. NAR members can design and build model rockets for over 25 different competition events. Official US Records can be set in many of these events. The NAR has an archive of competition rocket plans suitable for many contest events and skill levels.
If you have never tried NAR competition, here are some suggestions in order to get you started.
Get onto the NAR website and look up the "US Model Rocket Sporting Code", also known as the Pink Book. This is where you will find the rules for all of the events. Look into the rules carefully and build around them.
Have a notebook with you and take notes on your own flights and your competitors strategies and tactics. (Model rocket competitors do not keep secrets. They will be quite open to your questions!)
And of course, always remember to have fun! Hope to see you out on the range. For more information send an email to the Pawnee Pioneer Open Contest Director at iflyrockets@yahoo.com

The SUPER Single Shot Sweepstakes Monday, March 06 @ 18:32:00 MST by WMusselman (1124 reads) | SUPER Single Shot Sweepstakes
In addition to this year's club sponsored "Single Shot Sweepstakes" contest which is open to ALL flyers at all certification levels, there is also a side contest available for those with a hankering to compete on somewhat larger motors.
The rules are the same as the 2005 Single Shot Sweepstakes in that you may use electronic tracking on the bird and are not required to return the bird by close of waiver on the day of the flight. The real change is that the motor to be used is a standard Aerotech J350 (38/720 case). This could be a VERY close contest with an exceptional pot. This contest is open to all Level 2 and above flyers and the flight must be made at an NCR sanctioned launch and two NCR members must witness the altitude. Entry fee is a mere $20 and the prize pot (awarded at or after the NCR annual club meeting next January) may well be over $300.
